How Do Most ACs Work?

We think it’s important that homeowners are as informed as possible when it comes to their home’s air conditioners so they can be prepared and informed when the time comes and something needs to be fixed or replaced. To help our clients make the best decisions, here is a brief rundown on how the split-unit air conditioner in your average building or home functions.

  1. Warm air from inside the building is sucked into a device called an air handler which is then blown over evaporator coils.
  2. The evaporator coils contain an extremely cold chemical called “refrigerant” that runs through your entire AC system. As the air passes over the evaporators, heat is transferred from the warm air into the refrigerant. The cooled air that exits the other side is then pumped throughout your home.
  3. The heated refrigerant in the condenser coil is then transferred to the outside unit, called a condenser, via pipes. There, the refrigerant enters a device called a compressor which heats the refrigerant and transfers it to more coils that wrap around the outside unit.
  4. As the hot refrigerant is being pumped around the condenser, the fan on the unit is constantly sucking cooler air from outside over the hot coils wrapping around the unit, which releases the heat that was once stored inside of your home into the air outside.
  5. After the refrigerant is cooled in the outside unit, it’s then pumped back inside where it passes through a metering device that cools the refrigerant back to its original cold state.

As you can see, your common air conditioner is a closed system with multiple points where failure and damage are possible. We hope that this brief description of how most ACs function will help you better understand any service or repairs that your system may need. If your home uses a heat pump or some other specialized system for climate control, our technicians will be more than happy to give you a thorough rundown of how your AC functions.
